Abstract
Harry's babyhood was blighted by a brutal step-father. When five, his mother marries a decent man, a coal miner and believer in workers' rights. He graduates from Oxford with dreams of being an artist and working in Paris. But when his grandfather falls ill he elects to accompany him to a sanatorium.
