As he lies dying in 1944 in Lodge's fictional account, H.G. Wells takes the opportunity to reflect on his many sexual conquests, but finds himself focusing on his memories of a handful of wives and mistresses. Recollecting his time with these particular women, he comes to more fully understand himself and his complicated relationships with people, literature, politics, and the mysteries of life itself.
