Abstract
Eriksen (social anthropology, U. of Oslo) surveys his field's theories and treatments on the construction of ethnicity and nations, comparing and evaluating their respective claims. The work was written to serve as a core text for undergraduate courses and broadly covers such topics as ethnic identity and ideology, the historical development of ethnicity, minorities and the state, identity politics and culture.
