Dana, a modern African-American woman, is is snatched abruptly from her home in 1976 California and transported to the antebellum South in order to save the life of a white slave owner.

In the distant future humans are one of only three known intelligent species. One of the others, the Klikiss, has inexplicably vanished.

Early in the 25th century, humans ignited a fierce war with the hydrogues.
