Old Times on the Mississippi is a non-fiction work by Mark Twain. It was published in 1876. Originally published in serial form in the Atlantic Monthly, in 1875, this same work was published as chapters 4 through 17 in Twain's later work, Life on the Mississippi (1883). Old Times on the the Mississippi has one last chapter that has nothing to do with the rest of the book. A Literary Nightmare describes the funny/sad/maddening effect that a catchy jingle can have on those unlucky enough to be captured by one.

Rachel led a life that many people would envy -- she had an interesting and challenging job and an attractive boyfriend who showered her with attention. Admittedly, there were times when job and boyfriend clashed. Melville came from the glamorous world of television and sometimes found it hard to accept Rachel's devotion to the busy London hospital where she worked. A Story Between Jest and Earnest is a 1935 science fiction novel by the British author Olaf Stapledon. The novel explores the theme of the Übermensch (superman) in the character of John Wainwright, whose supernormal human mentality inevitably leads to conflict with normal human society and to the destruction of the utopian colony founded by John and other superhumans.

Lang Hyland, undeniably attractive, was also a womaniser - 3 months was the average life of his romances. As his secretary, Nicola knew of his ways and intended to remain just his secretary!

Oblomov is the best known novel by Russian writer Ivan Goncharov, first published in 1859. Oblomov is also the central character of the novel, often seen as the ultimate incarnation of the superfluous man, a symbolic character in 19th-century Russian literature. Oblomov is a young, generous nobleman who seems incapable of making important decisions or undertaking any significant actions. Spoiled as a child to the point of not even being able to put on his own socks, Oblomov is unprepared to deal with the smallest difficulty of adult life. In his fevered dreams he sees the words "Oblomovstchina" ("Oblomovism" or in this translation "the disease of Oblomovka") in flaming letters on the ceiling putting a name to the disability of which he is all too aware. This romantic novel was considered a satire of Russian nobility whose social and economic function was increasingly in question in mid-nineteenth century Russia, and from it the word "Oblomovstchina" entered the Russian vocabulary.

Dr. Tracy Redfern had signed on as ship's doctor for the Atlantic Star bound for the West Indies. She found herself on the Antarctic Star by mistake heading for Antarctica on a whaling trip!

Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution is a book by Peter Kropotkin on the subject of mutual aid, written while he was living in exile in England. It was first published by William Heinemann in London in October 1902. The individual chapters had originally been published in 1890-96 as a series of essays in the British monthly literary magazine, Nineteenth Century. Written partly in response to Social Darwinism and in particular to Thomas H. Huxley’s Nineteenth Century essay, The Struggle for Existence, Kropotkin’s book drew on his experiences in scientific expeditions in Siberia to illustrate the phenomenon of cooperation. After examining the evidence of cooperation in nonhuman animals, “savages,” “barbarians,” in medieval cities, and in modern times, he concludes that cooperation and mutual aid are as important in the evolution of the species as competition and mutual strife, if not more so.

Most of Hawthorne's early writings were magazine stories subsequently collected in books. His second story collection, Mosses from an Old Manse, includes many of his best-known short stories. Among the 22 stories in this edition are "Young Goodman Brown," "Rappucini's Daughter," "The Birthmark," "Egotism, or the Bosom Serpent," "Roger Malvin's Burial," and "The Artist of the Beautiful."
