Is war the only way of reviving an overpopulated, degenerate world? Knowle Noland - ex-convict, ex-traveller and captain of the tramp freighter Trieste Star - has always believed that war was senseless and futile. But faced with starvation and disease in a barren land, where robots and prison gangs tend the poison-drenched countryside, and under the influence of the beautiful Justine, who believes that a global war is the only answer, Knowle begins to hope that a war begun by him will wipe out millions and lead to a better world for the survivors.

Ten thousand men and women, exiled by the restrictive governments of Earth, are riding a man-made habitat to the planet Saturn. They form a volatile community - one needs only a spark to set off an explosion that could end in disaster.

Following his visit to the red planet of Malacandra, known to our world as Mars, Dr Ransom's adventures continue when he is called to the beautiful paradise planet of Perelandra, or Venus, which is in grave peril. There he discovers floating islands and bubble trees, as well as his old enemy Dr. Weston, who is intent upon evil once more.

The Doctor and Mel Bush, looking for a swimming pool, land in Paradise Towers, a luxurious 22nd century high rise apartment building now fallen into disrepair and chaos. The building is divided between roaming gangs of young girls called Kangs, grouped in colour theme, and the Doctor and Mel encounter the Red Kangs. They have just discovered the death of the last Yellow Kang and are plotting how to attack the Blue Kangs.

A $10,000 prize lures Tom into competing at a local aviation meet at Eagle Park. Tom is determined to build the fastest plane around, but his plans mysteriously disappear, which means Tom must redesign his new airplane from the beginning. A side-plot through the story is Mr. Swift's failing health.

Tom, we're having a problem with the gyro-stabilizer, said Mark Faber, gray-haired president of the Faber Electronics Company. "Hope you can find out what's wrong." The eighteen-year-old inventor accepted the challenge with a smile. "I'll be glad to try, sir," he replied. Bud Barclay, a dark-haired young flier and Tom Swift Jr.'s closest friend, chuckled. "If anyone can get the bugs out of your new invention, genius boy here will do it!" The two boys followed Mr. Faber and his engineers to a wooden building which was tightly guarded.
