Ish is introduced to Lutha's Headland, a cruel and primitive society driven by fear and superstition. He distrusts Lutha and her beautiful, elegant friend and lieutenant Kalik. Ish wishes to escape but he cannot go alone, as this would mean leaving behind a group of terrorised children.
