n June of 1860 three-year-old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outdoor privy with his throat slit. The crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection, ironically destroying, in the process, the career of perhaps the greatest detective in the land, Jonathan Whicher of Scotland Yard.

Lawyer and ex-convict Landon Reed, desperate to prove his worth, takes a high-profile murder case, but when his boss and other lawyers in the firm are murdered, Landon must find the killer before he become the next target.

Detective Arieh-Ben Roi of the Jerusalem police investigates the murder of a well-known Israeli journalist and discovers a connection to the mysterious death of a 1930s Egyptologist, who had claimed to have uncovered a labyrinth of unfathomable treasures.
