  • Mémoires : fils de la nation

    Creator

    Le Pen, Jean-Marie

    Abstract

    Creator

    Savoie, Donald J.

    Abstract

    Creator

    Trichet, Jean-Claude

    Abstract

  • Hostile environment : how immigrants became scapegoats

    Creator

    Goodfellow, Maya

    Abstract

How migrants became the scapegoats of contemporary mainstream politics. From the 1960s, the UK's immigration policy—introduced by both Labour and Tory governments—has been a toxic combination of racism and xenophobia. Maya Goodfellow tracks this history through to the present day, looking at both legislation and rhetoric, to show that distinct forms of racism and dehumanization have produced a confused and draconian immigration system. She examines the arguments made against immigration in order to dismantle and challenge them.

  • Green card soldier : between model immigrant and security threat

    Creator

    Aptekar, Sofya

    Abstract

An in-depth and troubling look at a little-known group of immigrants-non-citizen soldiers who enlist in the US military. While the popular image of the US military is one of citizen soldiers protecting their country, the reality is that nearly 5 percent of all first-time military recruits are noncitizens. Their reasons for enlisting are myriad, but many are motivated by the hope of gaining citizenship in return for their service.

  • Everyday Stalinism : ordinary life in extraordinary times : Soviet Russia in the 1930s

    Creator

    Fitzpatrick, Sheila

    Abstract

Here is a pioneering account of everyday life under Stalin, written by one of our foremost authorities on modern Russian history. Focusing on urban areas in the 1930s, Sheila Fitzpatrick shows that with the adoption of collectivization and the first Five-Year Plan, everyday life was utterly transformed. With the abolition of the market, shortages of food, clothing, and all kinds of consumer goods became endemic.

  • Death in Hamburg : society and politics in the cholera years

    Creator

    Evans, Richard J.

    Abstract

"A tremendous book, the biography of a city which charts the multifarious pathways from bacilli to burgomaster." -Roy Porter, London Review of Books. Why were nearly 10,000 people killed in six weeks in Hamburg, while most of Europe was left almost unscathed? As Richard J. Evans explains, it was largely because the town was a "free city" within Germany that was governed by the "English" ideals of laissez-faire.

  • Canada : beyond grudges, grievances, and disunity

    Creator

    Savoie, Donald J.

    Abstract

Canada's political structure runs contrary to North America's economic geography and the north-south economic pull. Canada imported political and administrative institutions designed for a unitary state, and its political leaders have struggled to make them work since the country was founded. Because of this, many Canadians, their communities, and their regions view themselves as victims to a greater degree than groups in other Western democracies do. Our federal government has shown a greater willingness to apologize for historical wrongs than other Western countries.
