  • Towards a Canada of Light

    Creator

    Powe, Bruce W.

    Abstract

B.W. Powe’s visionary work of political philosophy dares to re-imagine Canada. First conceived in 1993, this fully revised, expanded, updated edition, complete with an inspired new introduction that considers Canada in a post-9/11 context, is a landmark book that has become a classic text for understanding the work-in-progress that is Canada. Countering George Grant’s pessimistic Lament for a Nation, which defined the intellectual climate in Canada for decades, Powe argues that our country is in fact a completely original model of what an enlightened polity might be for the 21st century.

  • Media And Voters In Canadian Election Campaigns

    Creator

    Fletcher, Frederick J.

    Abstract

This volume presents five studies on the relationship between the media and voters. Each examines some aspects of the flow of information to voters during election campaigns and all reflect the assumption that the right to vote must include the right of access and sufficient information to make an informed decision. In separate studies, Jean Crête and Robert MacDermid examine existing studies and data on the relationship between attention to media and voter information and behaviours. Both studies discuss methods for improving voter information.

  • Arctic Alternatives Civility of Militarism in the Circumpolar North

    Creator

    Griffiths, Franklyn

    Abstract

This book in itself is testimony to transition in the affairs of the north circumpolar region. Written in 1988 and updated in 1990, the papers assembled here have been overtaken by events. Non-military or civil requirements thus seemed to warrant a new and far more important place in our understanding of security. It’s appopriate to explore not only the potential of civil cooperation in countering the force of militarism, but the utility of a comprehensive conception of Arctic security. This book will look at how these views fare, once we’ve had a look at the region and its problems.

  • Police Current Issues in Canadian Law Enforcement

    Creator

    Forcese, Dennis P.

    Abstract

Not a day goes by in which the police do not figure prominently in the news. Whether it be as investigators of a rural homicide, or as the subjects of a debate on police chases, the police are ever-present. They are news. The public’s fear of crime and the "law and order" agenda prominently advanced by many politicians make Police a particularly topical collection of original essays that examine developments and issues of public concern relating to Canada’s municipal police.

    Creator

    Seidle, F. Leslie

    Abstract

The two studies in Interest Groups and Elections in Canada explore the nature and influence of special interest groups. Janet Hiebert reviews the limits on interest groups adopted in 1974 and amended in 1983, profiles the groups involved int he 1988 federal election, and discusses relevant legislation and jurisprudence in the provinces and abroad.

  • Hopes and fears

    Creator

    Newcombe, Hanna

    Abstract

It has been said many times that the human future is clouded by multiple and mutually interacting problems. While in the 19th century we had the luxury of believing in almost automatic progress - an "onward and upward" assumption - that belief has been shattered by two world wars, more than 150 smaller ones, the invention of weapons of mass destruction, increasing degradation of the environment, both by pollution and resource exhaustion (i.e.

  • Comparative Issues in Party and Election Finance Volume 4 of the Research Studies

    Creator

    Seidle, F. Leslie

    Abstract

This book is one of 23 volumes of research commissioned by the Royal Commission on Electoral Reform and Party Financing, and one of five volumes within this series dealing specifically with party and election finance. Because the issue of money in elections is as old as democracy, the experience of other countries is instructive. The studies in this volume offer Canadians information about approaches to funding political parties and elections in the United States and Western Europe.
