The Discovering Canada series presents information, stories and activities to make Canadian history interesting to young people. Each of the eleven illustrated books focuses on a theme in Canadian history and includes primary source quotes, biographical details, vocabulary, activities and games. This is the story of Canada's Black heritage, amazing people and events that helped shape this country.

Reporting the Resistance brings together two first-person accounts to give a view “from the ground” of the developments that shocked Canada and created the province of Manitoba. In 1869 and 1870, Begg and Hargrave were regular correspondents for (respectively) the Toronto Globe and the Montreal Herald. While neither man was a committed supporter of the Metis or Louis Riel, each gives a more complex, and more sympathetic, view of the resistance than is commonly expected from the Anglophone community of Red River.

Thomas Douglas, the Fifth Earl of Selkirk (1770-1820), was a complex man of his times, whose passions left an indelible mark on Canadian history. A product of the Scottish Enlightenment and witness to the French Revolution, he dedicated his fortune and energy to the vision of a new colony at the centre of North America. His final legacy, the Red River Settlement, led to the eventual end of the dominance of the fur trade and began the demographic and social transformation of western Canada. The product of three decades of research, this is the definitive biography of Lord Selkirk.

On June 18, 1812, the Americans declared war on Britain and attacked the nearest British target, Canada. Although outnumbered ten to one, Canadian volunteers in the War of 1812 successfully defended their homes and towns from the skilled American armies.

The purpose of this biography is to bring to public attention the importance of the contributions made by Enos Stutsman, an American, to the history of the province and the Northwest generally. It also attempts to impress and entertain the reader by highlighting Stutsman’s personal qualities.

The area between the Great Lakes and Lake Winnipeg, bounded on the north by the Hudson Bay lowlands, is sometimes known as the "Petit Nord." Providing a link between the cities of eastern Canada and the western interior, it was a critical communication and transportation hub for the North American fur trade for over 200 years. It also became the dispersal point for waves of devastating disease. An extensive trading network, both among Aboriginal groups and fur trade society, carved a path for the diffusion of diseases such as smallpox, influenza, and measles.

This is a revisionist account of Highland Scottish emigration to what is now Canada, in the formative half century before Waterloo.

Despite the long human history of the Canadian central arctic, there is still little historical writing on the Inuit peoples of this vast region. Although archaeologists and anthropologists have studied ancient and contemporary Inuit societies, the Inuit world in the crucial period from the 16th to the 20th centuries remains largely undescribed and unexplained. In Order to Live Untroubled helps fill this 400-year gap by providing the first, broad, historical survey of the Inuit peoples of the central arctic.

Founded in 1913, the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba was one of the earliest architecture programs in Canada. With a reputation for providing a solid Beaux-Arts education, and with the promotion of John A. Russell to the position of Dean, the school became a leader in North America for disseminating Modernist principles. Russell, an American trained at MIT, immediately began hiring first-rate faculty internationally, including James Donahue, who studied under Gropius at Harvard; Wolfgang Gerson, who trained in Bristol; and the Scottish Jim Christie.

Manitoba has been at the crossroads of many of the important debates and events in Canadian history. From the early fur trade to the Riel Rebellion to the Winnipeg General Strike, Manitobans have frequently played crucial roles in Canadian and sometimes world history. Until now, there has been no comprehensive, contemporary source for information on the many Manitobans who have left their mark on history and society.
