  • Feminist praxis revisited : critical reflections on university-community engagement

    Creator

    Dean, Amber

    Johnson, Jennifer L.

    Luhmann, Susanne

    Abstract

In Feminist Praxis Revisited, Women's and Gender Studies (WGS) practitioners reflect on how the field has sought to integrate its commitment to activism and social change with community-based learning in post-secondary institutions. Teaching about and for social change has been a core value of the field since its inception, and co-op, practica, and internships have long been part of the curriculum in the professional schools.

  • Moments of crisis : religion and national identity in Québec

    Creator

    Morrison, Ian A.

    Abstract

In the past two decades, Québec has been racked by a series of controversies in which the religiosity of migrants and minorities has been represented as a threat to the province's once staunchly Catholic, and now resolutely secular, identity. In Moments of Crises, Ian Morrison locates these debates within a longer history of crises within - and transformations of - Québécois identity, from the Conquest of New France in 1760 to contemporary times.

  • Identities and interests : race, ethnicity, and affinity voting

    Creator

    Besco, Randy

    Abstract

Identities and Interests offers an entirely new perspective on the role of racial and ethnic identities in Canadian elections. Using a series of experiments, as well as candidate and census data, Randy Besco demonstrates that self-identification matters far more than self-interest, ideology, or policy. The largest minority groups - Chinese and South Asian Canadians - tend to support candidates of their own ethnicity. Yet inter-minority affinity voting also reveals the potential for "rainbow coalitions" and how minorities themselves think in terms of a white/non-white divide.

  • Fighting with the empire : Canada, Britain, and global conflict, 1867-1947

    Creator

    Marti, Steve

    Pratt, William John

    Abstract

Canadians often characterize their military history as a march toward nationhood, but in the first eighty years of Confederation they were fighting for the British Empire. War forced Canadians to re-examine their relationship to Britain and to one another. As French Canadians, Indigenous peoples, and those with roots in continental Europe and beyond mobilized for war, their participation challenged the imagined homogeneity of Canada as a British nation.

  • Mobilizing global knowledge : refugee research in an age of displacement

    Abstract

In 2018, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees documented a record high 71.4 million displaced people around the world. As states struggle with the costs of providing protection to so many people and popular conceptions of refugees have become increasingly politicized and sensationalized, researchers have come together to form regional and global networks dedicated to working with displaced people to learn how to respond to their needs ethically, compassionately, and for the best interests of the global community.
