Just when Dylan Maples is settling down after last summer's trip to Ireland's Eye, the parental units are at it again-planning another family adventure. Only this time, it's not a summer vacation, but an extended trip way up north to Cobalt, Ontario, in the middle of a bitter winter. Once a thriving silver mining community, all that's left of the town's rich history are the long abandoned mines. A Toronto millionaire has hired Dylan's dad to retrieve a fortune in silver allegedly stolen from his grandfather back in the early part of the twentieth century.

After a vicious storm aboard ship, fourteen-year-old Caleb is tossed into the Atlantic Ocean. Frightened and alone, he finds himself nudged awake. He's been recovered by one of Sable Island's legendary wild stallions and is given shelter by a mysterious stranger, Norse, who is secretly living on the island. As Caleb recovers and gets to know his strange rescuer, learning the art of scrimshaw, storytelling, and survival, he wonders how he'll manage to remain on the island he's come to love.

Dylan is twelve years old and embarking on his first ocean kayaking trip with his parents. He has spent the last year convincing them that he is ready for the challenging-and very dangerous-adventure. In fact, he has been determined to go ever since he heard about the destination: Ireland's Eye. The small island off the coast of Newfoundland is the easternmost settlement in Canada. Or it was. It is now hauntingly empty, a ghost town clinging to the edge of the unforgiving Atlantic.

When tragedy strikes, the family must decide whether or not to make the trip without Dougal's father. Once the ship departs, Dougal is drawn to the haunting sounds of the lone piper on-board. (The instrument, while still illegal in their homeland at the time, was brought aboard to keep spirits up.) When a violent storm knocks the Hector two weeks off course, Dougal's dream of becoming a piper has to take a back seat to keeping his three little sisters alive.

Nancy McDonald's career as a journalist included the television programs W5, Canada AM, and Marketplace; she then went on to become a sought-after freelance writer, penning everything from documentaries to live-action scripts to comic books. Boy from Berlin is her first full-length novel. She's working on a sequel. Nancy lives in Stratford, Ontario, where she revels in Shakespeare, takes theatregoers on tours of the Costume Warehouse, and treads the boards with the Perth County Players.

When a circus train derails in Toronto in 1925, a lion escapes and finds shelter in High Park, a four-hundred-acre park in the west end of the city. No one knows about the creature except for Sadie Menken, the feisty daughter of a pie-maker. As various squirrels, dogs and an expensive peacock meet unfortunate ends, and the park "beast" is spotted by visitors, the lion's presence draws the attention of the authorities. Can Sadie save the lion? Can she resist the temptation to try to make a pet of a creature that is wild at heart?

But they end up finding a lot more than just golf balls in the murky waters: they uncover a life-size bronze statue of a man! Following their discovery, the best friends start getting mysterious phone calls warning them to stay away from the golf course property, or else!
