Few artists (one thinks of Rilke and Hopkins) have presumed to evoke the spirit of embodied Nature. A. F. Moritz not only succeeds in thus animating a living world, but he deals with our human presence and assault on it with sympathy and a larger vision than the misanthropy such injuries easily summon. This is nature poetry with a difference: through Moritz's landscapes, from the abandoned industries of the Rust Belt to the decaying monuments of vanished civilization, move the vivid and engaging characters we have come to expect from this clear-eyed and open-hearted poet.

The writer of the letter in Kenneth Radu's title poem is reaching across an enormous silence: from a microchipped contemporary Canadian setting to the rest home on the Black Sea where his father is dying; and then even further, back to their lives in a peasant village before the son’s escape under the wire.

A. F. Moritz's poems integrate nature and enduring myth with our inner life so movingly, so convincingly, that they almost seem to be our own thoughts. His direct and intimate tone, and the power, calm, and clarity of his expression, are solid foundations for an exhilarating breadth and range of imagination.

Lorri Neilsen Glenn’s poems welcome the reader into a place where the strange is made familiar and the familiar reveals its own magic. Here the combustible materials of childhood and old age are always potentially present, and the attention paid them multi-dimensional. Her poems engage their subjects with wits and senses on full alert, whether the occasion is an encounter with the full moon during a lonely drive across the prairies, a raucous community dance at the oldest dance hall in the Maritimes, or the opening of the door into “the small town inside”.

Monologue Dogs is a series of contemporary dramatic monologues. Every "voice" has its own imagined rhythm and nuances of poetic speech that are as vibrant, wayward, mournful, errant, or unruly as the characters who speak. Setting the lyric against street argot, archaic language against deflating or ironic feints, metaphors against declarative sentences, the elegiac against the ribald, classical or literary allusions against anachronistic references, these monologues reflect our own disordered subjectivities.

Astatine is an Italian girl, who like Dante's Beatrice, haunts the narrator of Michael Kenyon's incandescent fourth book of poetry. Named after a radioactive element whose isotopes endure half-lives of mere seconds, she is simultaneously a disappearing and abiding presence who cajoles and comforts, who questions and points, who often leaves the poet puzzled, electrified, heart-broken, and wanting more. Astatine is Kenyon's meditation on the evanescent and persevering tragedy of our lives on Earth.
