24 Montreal locations, each visited at a different hour of the day. 24 hours in the life of a city that never sleeps. Author Bill Brownstein writes about the owners, workers, and patrons; Daniel Haber took the pictures. These are stories about people and places that make Montreal unique.

Near the end of October 1941, a few hundred soldiers from New Brunswick were among the 1,975 Canadian troops who set sail from Vancouver to reinforce the British Colony of Hong Kong. Within two short months, after a hard-fought but disastrous battle against the Imperial Japanese Army, the island fell to the invaders on Christmas Day, and its defenders were ordered to surrender by the governor of Hong Kong.

During the Second World War, hundreds of New Brunswick woodsmen joined the Canadian Forestry Corps to log the Scottish Highlands as part of the Canadian war effort. Patrick "Pat" Hennessy of Bathurst was one of them. For five years, Pat served as camp cook with 15 Company of the Canadian Forestry Corps near the ancient town of Beauly, Scotland.

At 31 years old, Major Cyrus Inches resolved to survive the Great War, and did so without losing his sense of humour, in spite of the tragedies he constantly faced. His letters home were stored and left undisturbed for almost ninety years. Cleverly written with wit and humour, they reveal voluminous details of life during the war. Cyrus Inches also kept a diary and published a booklet called The 1st Canadian Heavy Battery in France — Farewell Message to NCOs and Men, which chronicled the movements and the battles of his battery.

Daniel MacMillan never saw the battlefields of Passchendaele or Vimy Ridge. A farmer in the tiny New Brunswick community of Williamsburg, he experienced the Great War entirely from the "home front." War on the Home Front: The Farm Diaries of Daniel MacMillan, 1914-1927 is a portrait of the other side of war from the perspective of a man who, like countless families across North America, had no choice but keep on going with his life as sons, nephews, brothers and fathers fought and died on battlefields worlds away.

Harry L. Gill, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 at the age of 18. During his short but adventure-filled career, he flew a Hurricane fighter bomber over France, England, and India and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. In 1943 his airplane was shot down over Burma, and he died in the crash. Hurricane Pilot captures the perspective of a young man in the middle of a war in Europe and Asia.

Elle laisse derrière elle un passé dont elle croyait pouvoir se libérer aisément. Mais il lui faudra force et détermination pour transformer l’adversité et ne pas sombrer dans l’abîme. Oser.

Ma mère, ma fille, ma sœur nous plonge au cœur du drame personnel d’une adolescente d’origine kabyle vivant en France, déchirée entre les valeurs traditionnelles berbères et celles de son pays d’accueil. Ce récit autobiographique nous éclaire sur une réalité mal connue et rarement exprimée par ces femmes — mères, filles et sœurs —, victimes innocentes des traditions arabo-musulmanes.

« Portant mon regard sur le fauteuil placé en face de moi, je fus aussi surpris que ravi d’y voir Pan. C’était le Pan que j’avais connu jadis (voir Un retour à l’unité et autres précédents livres, Éd. Ariane). Son énergie m’avait déjà accompagné, mais pas ainsi. Son corps doré, grand et svelte, était habillé simplement. Il était assis devant moi et je voyais ses longs pieds nus (des sabots plus précisément), son large crâne chauve au front bombé et ses petites cornes spiralées sur ses sourcils coiffant d’énormes yeux dorés. Des yeux qui transpercent.

Après avoir passé les initiations proposées par le grand Esprit de la nature Pan, Michael Roads obtient le droit de pénétrer dans les univers non physiques. « Au moment où j’ai franchi ces portes, le temps linéaire et la réalité ordinaire ont cessé d’exister. Tout ce qui m’était connu se trouvait brusquement remplacé par un inconnu absolu. Le temps, à supposer qu’il ait encore un sens, était sphérique, de sorte que tous les points d’une sphère représentaient le même temps – toujours. » Michael se retrouve dans son corps de lumière.
