Cage, Nick, and Harper Rutledge are the sons of an Episcopalian minister and his faithfl housewife. Cage is the golden boy, Nick is slow to blossom but full of potential, and the youngest, Harper, struggles to live up to his brothers. But Nick's sudden death provokes a derailed Cage to spiral into the depths of manic depression. For over two decades, Harper follows in Cage's wake, mending the damages from his brother's manic sprees, and consoling Cage's shattered spirits in the depressive aftermath.
